The month of November has ushered in some fantastic upgrades at Disa Park Pre-Primary School. The the western boundary of the school was given a much needed makeover with the installation of a 2.1m high galvanised bar steel fence. This replaced the old diamond mesh and barbed wire fence that was beginning to become a bit of an eyesore and was due for retirement. Thanks to Jamie’s mom Suzie for taking charge of this project.

New fence on western boundary
The bar steel fence is made of galvanised steel, which means we’ll have to wait 6 months before we can paint it otherwise the paint will flake off, but even so it will be a vast improvement.

Watch this space for news of the paint job… or even better, let us know if you’d like to help out our Repairs & Maintenance portfolio in getting the fence painted – it would be great to get a team of parents together to do this job one Saturday morning, and the kids can come and play in the playground while work is in progress.

Grade R classroom and drywalling
A part of Yellow Class was sectioned off with dry walling to give the Grade R’s their own classroom (now the Red Class) and create a much needed ‘quiet’ corner in the Yellow Class. The folding door between Green Class and Yellow Class was replaced with a sound proof drywall, which means we can no longer open up the two classrooms for concerts. But the decision was made as the noise levels between the two classrooms was too high, and we have opted to hold future school concerts at alternative venues that could provide a more ideal space with proper chairs, better parking etc.

New carpets
Thanks to Alfie’s mom Daisy who organised some new carpets for all the classrooms at bargain basement prices. The ‘road’ rugs in the Blue, Green and Yellow Classes have become firm favourites.

The new 'road' rugs in the classrooms are a hit!

Windows and glass doors
All the windows and glass doors underwent maintenance to replace cracked panes, check fixtures and fittings and ensure ease of opening and closing. Thanks to Alessandro’s mom Heidi for overseeing this.

Electrics and security spotlights
Security lights have been installed at the front of the school and over the back lawn. Very few of us will get to appreciate it as they only come on at night, but they look great. The electrics throughout the school were also checked and maintained where necessary.

Paint jobs
A number of items in the classrooms and playground areas have been given a new lease of life with a fresh coat of colourful paint in the primary colours of our school’s logo. Green Class’s mezzanine play area was painted a cheerful apple green, and the children’s lockers a darker green. Shelves in the Yellow Class were painted a sunny yellow, and the wendy house and bench outside are now a bright cherry red. The work was done over two weekends by Gift Msyali, who is both a fantastic handiman and painter and can be contacted for further work on 084 983 3110.

Items on auction included weekends away, cases of award winning wine, restaurant vouchers, an Android cell phone and a t-shirt signed by Zef-rap group Die Aantwoord.

The money raised at the auction was put towards upgrading the school, including the sectioning off of a new classroom for the Grade R pupils.

Disa Park Pre-Primary children thank their heroes on the anniversary of fire.

On 9 March 2011, a few of the children visited the Roeland Street Fire Station in order to thank the firemen who had saved the school from a devastating fire two years ago. On the night of 17 March 2009, a veld fire ravaged the slopes of Devils Peak. The flames were fanned by a strong South Easter, and many residents of Vredehoek, Oranjezicht, High Cape and University Estate were evacuated. But thanks to a massive and highly organised operation by local fire fighters, no one was hurt, nor were any houses burnt down.

Disa Park Pre-Primary occupies one of the highest plots on Devils Peak, and the fynbos on three sides of the school was burnt to a cinder. Yet, due to the efforts of the firemen, Disa Park, affectionately known as “the school on the mountain”, was saved.

Disa Park has been a pre-primary for over 30 years and had never experienced a fire like this before. The land all around the school was black with ash but amazingly the firemen had managed to completely prevent the fire from touching the school grounds. Staff and parents recall walking around the school in a daze the morning after the fire, as many who live in the city bowl had watched the fire raging through the night homes and were convinced the school had gone up in flames.

The children of Disa Park Pre-Primary, aged from 2 to 6 years old, now mark the anniversary of the fire with a donation of chocolates and cool drink to their brave heroes – the firemen of Roeland Street Fire Station.
